KiwiSaver was first announced in Budget 2005 as part of a package of Government initiatives designed to increase the level of savings by New Zealand households and support New Zealanders in retirement.
It focuses on encouraging saving through the workplace, which allows for deductions at source and provides a way to reach a broad section of the population.
The scheme commenced on 1 July 2007.
