Staples Rodway Taranaki Community Sponsorship

Our way of saying 'thanks'

It's not often accountants give money away.  But at Staples Rodway Taranaki we're firm believers in it.

We give away tens of thousands of dollars every year to a range of organisations and groups through sponsorship, complimentary accounting, auditing, taxation, IT and business advice as well as direct financial contributions.

“Why do we do it?” Managing Director Robin Brockie asks.  “Because, quite simply, we like to give something back.  We receive a lot of support through our clients in this community – and we’re a growing company.  By giving our time and expertise to organisations that wouldn’t normally have the capability or resources to deal with business issues, we’re saying we value what they do and we’re happy to help.”

Our sponsorship has generally targeted three areas: Health, the arts and education.  “Many of these groups receive minimal funding to operate. The Arts Festival, for example, runs on the smell of an oily rag in terms of bringing artists, including international performers for WOMAD (World of Music and Dance) to Taranaki.

“We are very community-focused. We have a lot of people out there who support us so we are very happy to be giving something back”.

We're pleased to support Taranaki's thriving arts scene through the Taranaki International Festival of Arts and WOMAD, Taranaki Arts Community Trust and the Real Tart Gallery, The Dame Malvina Major Foundation, and the Govett Brewster Foundation.

The TET Rescue Helicopter Trust provides a vital air rescue service for the region that we're proud to be behind, along with our association with the House for Karen and New Plymouth YMCA .

As accountants with an agricultural specialty The New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards provide a great way for us to get to know the upcoming cream of the crop.  And, supporting The Rotokare Scenic Reserve Trust lets us contribute to the preservation of a beautiful piece of New Zealand scenery we can all enjoy.

Our current community involvement includes:

Taranaki International Festival of the Arts

Staples Rodway Taranaki has supported the festival since it began 16 years ago and we have every intention of maintaining at least our current gold level sponsorship in years to come.

“We see it as a great opportunity to say thanks to our clients and others in the community who have supported us over the years. And that’s why we enjoy getting behind these acts, to ensure Taranaki has its share of highly-acclaimed performers that everybody in this community can enjoy,” says Staples Rodway director Robin Brockie.

Keep an eye on www.artsfest.co.nz for details of the 2008 event.

The Taranaki Arts Community Trust & Real Tart Gallery

New Plymouth is becoming quite a vibrant hot spot on the kiwi arts and entertainment scene and Staples Rodway is proud to be part of the city's growing creative ventures. The Real Tart Gallery opened in specially revamped premises in April 2006 under the management of Taranaki Arts Community Trust which was set in 2003 to drive the venture and is privileged to have internationally renowned artist Michael Smither as its patron.

Real Tart functions as a community art centre providing a platform for emerging local artists to show their work, a specialist gallery for high-profile Taranaki artists and a showcase for Maori and Pacific talent. This includes PACE (Pathways to arts and cultural employment), a Work and Income initiative to help unemployed artists back into work and plans are also underway to run community workshops and art classes and develop an art trail for the region.

Linda Wilkinson, TACT Trustee notes: “There's no doubt that we have had incredible amounts of help from Staples Rodway and we all feel very confident having such a prestigious accounting firm controlling the books. It gives us peace of mind to know we have that support. They provided the business structure to run the gallery, helped with computer technology and sourced equipment. It was vital we had solid accounting practices in place and it's important we are accountable for the business side of the gallery.”

House for Karen

The House for Karen was established by New Plymouth man Ronnie Van Dillen in memory of his wife, Karen, who lost her battle with cancer in 2003. Located at a beachfront site at Tipoka Road, near Rahotu, the house is designed as a haven for Taranaki cancer sufferers and their families.

The project to fund and build the house has been a huge community success story and Staples Rodway is proud to say: “We’ve been delighted to help too”. Staples Rodway Director, Greg Eden has been a Trustee since its inception in 2003, when the Karen Cornelia Trust was formed. “It's been an outstanding project and a great community effort. It was just amazing how the community got behind this, particularly the business community. I guess everyone is somehow touched by cancer, nearly every family has experienced someone who has had to go through it. But not everyone has access to time out and this home will give that much-needed space and time to be together as they cope with the illness.”

A sub-committee comprising Taranaki Hospice, Cancer Society and Karen Cornelia Trust members determine who uses the facility, for further information see www.ahouseforkaren.co.nz
